Pierce has a self-sacrificing nature, one which has quite literally proven to be the death of her. She expresses devotion and care towards all creatures of the wild and empathises with their nature through the rebellious, wild and untameable tenacity of her own soul.
Her fearless resolve to bring her beloved former friend, Hannah Chang, the justice she holds herself responsible for denying her, after the depression drove her to be oblivious to her peril until it was too late, leads her to a low self-value enabling consistent challenges towards any given threat far superior to her substantial capabilities. Her feisty disposition, such compels her to throw tea in the face of deity of death, has landed her into unspeakable trouble. She is often reprimanded for the bizarre situations she discovers herself in on a regular basis. Thus Is often excluded from countless educational centres, when her intentions were often well towards others, just not herself.
She is reliant on the boundless love for the members her equally dysfunctional family whom she would, as she has so often demonstrated, much to The dismay of John Hayden and Alex Cabrero, give her own life for without a second thought, despite her fear of a very much real underworld. She holds no purpose to live without love and her concern upon death was her mothers emotional welfare automatically.
Pierce refrains from elaborating the circumstances of her accident once she becomes aware of the inevitable misfortune befalling any whom she so shares this terrible burden with, unfortunately, this only serves to further her isolation from the warm life of the people surrounding her, an acceptance she yearns for.
Although she is an expressive individual, she is reclusive and secretive by nature, however her caution is disarmed by the call of those helpless by circumstance. As she would of Pierce is an okay person, and she'll do anything for the people she loves. She is cut off from everyone else in her school except her cousin and her friend Kayla. Her boyfriend, John Hayden, is a death deity and rules over the Underworld. She is also friendly with Mr. Smith, the cemetery sexton. She is also very stubborn and it is hard to persuade her out of doing something once she puts her mind to it.
Overall, Pierce is not the ideal delicate figure of virtue her grandmother intended her mother to be. While intuitive, she is no academic intellectual. Her intelligence lies in her emotional perception of those who would harm her such as Mr Mueller and even her own grandmother, she is observant, honest to the point of brutality, selfless, modest, compassionate and wise. The manifestation of her love is through her devotion and loyalty, she bears her bleeding heart on a sleeve for all to see, despite being feisty, rebellious wild and impatient with those who speak without clarity.
Pierce is quite pretty, and is described as "not only being treated as a princess, but looking like one, too." She has long dark hair, and big brown eyes. She has smooth white skin and is usually seen wearing dresses, since her boyfriend John likes seeing her in them.
Parents- Pierce's parents - Zachary and Deborah - divorce in Abandon and get back together Awaken.
Grandmother- Pierce's grandmother is possessed by a furie. She is Deborah's mother.
John Hayden- John is Pierce's boyfriend.
Alex- Alex is Pierce's unpleasant cousin.
Kayla- Pierce's best friend.
Though she tries returning to the life she knew before the accident, Pierce can't help but feel at once a part of this world, and apart from it. Yet she's never alone. . . because someone is always watching her. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone wants you back.
But now she's moved to a new town. Maybe at her new school, she can start fresh. Maybe she can stop feeling so afraid.
Only she can't. Because even here, he finds her. That's how desperately he wants her back. She knows he's no guardian angel, and his dark world isn't exactly heaven, yet she can't stay away. . . especially when he appears when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most.
But if she lets herself fall any further, she may find herself back in the place she most fears: the Underworld.
Seventeen year old Pierce Oliviera isn't dead. Not this time.
But she is being held against her will in the dim, twilit world between heaven and hell, where the spirits of the deceased wait before embarking upon their final journey.
Her captor, John Hayden, claims it’s for her own safety. Because not all the departed are dear. Some are so unhappy with where they ended up after leaving the Underworld, they’ve come back as Furies, intent on vengeance…on the one who sent them there and on the one whom he loves.
But while Pierce might be safe from the Furies in the Underworld, far worse dangers could be lurking for her there…and they might have more to do with its ruler than with his enemies.
And unless Pierce is careful, this time there’ll be no escape.
Death has her in his clutches. She doesn’t want him to let go.
Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera knew by accepting the love of John Hayden, she’d be forced to live forever in the one place she’s always dreaded most: the Underworld. The sacrifice seemed worth it, though, because it meant she could be with the boy she loves.
But now her happiness — and safety — are threatened, all because the Furies have discovered that John has broken one of their strictest rules: He revived a human soul.
If the balance between life and death isn’t fixed, both the Underworld and Pierce’s home back on earth will be wiped away. But there’s only one way to restore order. Someone has to die.
